We’re approaching the autumn equinox: the day, Sept 22nd. Equinox comes from the Latin aequalis, meaning equal, as the duration of daylight equals the dark.
Depending on where we live, the Equinox has different associations. In Hong Kong we call it the ‘Moon Festival’, celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the Chinese calendar. This is a harvest festival that has its history dating back over 3,000 years to the Shang Dynasty when people thanked the moon god for the harvest. Now, it’s the most charming scene of families celebrating on beaches and parks, picnicking with circles of lanterns and candles.
However for some, certainly going into the Northern hemisphere autumn, we may feel a sense of sadness as the Earth shifts into her fallow phase. We don’t know exactly why we feel this but the ancient Greeks had a good idea, believing this was the time when the lovely Persephone (the Sun) left her harvest goddess Mother Demeter to join her father Hades in the Underworld. Basically, they observed that the sun, the light from which grows our plants – had gone.
Symbolically, it’s the death of, and time to leave the past year. For us, this may mean consolidating on the achievements and good stuff, letting go of the bad stuff.
Of course, it’s different in the Southern Hemisphere when with the onset of Spring we feel a thrill of excitement or a quickening of the spirit. We may not always be aware of our innate connectedness to nature, but our conscious being recognizes we are also part of Nature’s upshift and regeneration of the Spring. For us, a time to make plans and start to metamorphose into our new being. with every Spring there’s an opportunity for a new idea, new persona, new way of being. Out with the old, in with the new and better!
