When energy healing therapy gets discussed, it seems there are a lot of people out there with questions about either cleansing “negative” energy, or purifying room energy, and I wanted to address them here.
Is It Really Negative Energy?
In psychology and energy psychology we call it ‘transference’ and ‘counter-transference’. An example is when a therapist’s emotions are projected onto the client (your average ‘bad day’) or therapist begins to feel an emotion out of the blue. For example, I said to a patient recently, ‘I’m beginning to feel really angry, and don’t know why. You not feeling like that by any chance, are you?”
At the end of the day, emotions are only human, however the trick is to not let them affect us – to notice them, and choose to respond instead of react.
As we are all made of the same base substance – particles of light energy – of course we are sensitive to others energies and emotions.
Where Does Negative Energy Come From?
So called negative energies may result from the thoughts and focus of others, who are consciously or unconsciously focusing on anger, envy, jealousy, vengeance, or other spiteful thoughts. When this energy is deliberately projected, it is known as a psychic attack. Sometimes a place that has housed these types of energies over a long period of time can absorb them, and a new visitor can experience this negative energy. I think we are all familiar with the feelings in old prison sites, or where atrocities occurred. Many people check the energy of a house before purchasing it, or do a cleansing ritual after they take possession. In the same way, items such as jewellery may carry some negative energy and benefit from cleansing.
Using Light To Cleanse And Clear Energy
Visualizing a healing, cleansing white light shining down and into your room is the best thing you can do. At the same time, ask for assistance. Whether you believe in the power of Gaia, your angels, or a deiety, pray and ask for their assistance. This will work every time!
Cleansing Negative Energy From Your Body
Salt has been used for centuries as one of the primary ways to cleanse negative energy, and so it’s a go-to when you feel your body has been exposed to negative energies. A great way to cleanse and relax yourself is to enjoy a soak in epsom salts. This gives you the relaxation of a warm bath, the cleansing benefit of salt, plus a dose of magnesium that your body may need – since most people are deficient in magnesium. Add two to six cups of epsom salts to a tub of warm water, depending on the size of the tub. You’re probably best to use pure epsom salts, not the “scented” variations that may contain chemicals, especially since cleansing is part of your plan. Have a relaxing soak for up to 40 minutes. Two to three times a week is recommended.
Purifying Room Energy In Your Home
If you feel your home is housing negative energies, below I’ve listed a number of traditional techniques for clearing those “energies”, based on fire, air, water and earth. However, of course, my top method would be to use LIGHT as mentioned above.
Burn Some Incense
Choose a scent that you find calming and soothing. You’ll find a range of scents available. Sandalwood is often burned in Buddhist temples because it promotes calm, while Jasmine can make you feel joyful.
Smudge Your Home With Sage
Smudging is a sacred ceremony involving the burning of sage or some other herb or plant. The term comes from ancient Native American traditions, though cultures around the world practice their own forms of it.
Open A Window And Let In Some Fresh Air
This may seem like a simple and obvious thing to do, but on cold days we often resist it. Perhaps we fret about our power bill or we dislike the chill. However, opening a window just for a brief time can help replenish the air in your home and help you dispel negative thoughts and energy.
Spray Essential Oils Around Your Home
Put a few drops of essential oil in pure water and use a spray bottle. Choose a scent you’re drawn to. Try rose, orange, lavender, frankincense, or patchouli. Rosemary is also a good scent, and research links it with improved memory and focus. But if you have pets, research the oils you intend to use. Cats and dogs may have issues with the particular oil you prefer.
Place a few crystals in the area. Black tourmaline is known for cleansing negative energy. Amethyst is also known for protecting you from negative energy. It can be placed under your pillow while you sleep, where it can help ward off negative thoughts. Cleanse your crystals periodically by exposing them to sunlight or washing them in running water.
More Techniques For Cleansing Negative Energy From Your Home
There is much more you can do to cleanse your home or work space of negative energy. Here is just a small list of additional ideas. Get creative!
Clear Clutter And Disorder
While some people may thrive on disorder, they are in the minority. If your space is open and inviting, you’ll find yourself much more comfortable living in it. Often the clutter serves as a reminder of things we meant to do but didn’t get around do: piles of papers like receipts we’ve intended to file away, books we want to read but haven’t gotten to yet. All these things can prey on us. So tidy up and make your space a place where you’re comfortable spending time in.
Remove Or Repair Broken Or Frayed Items
Broken item or frayed objects can encourage negative energy. That chair that makes you wonder when it’s going to collapse under you? Those curtains that make you cringe each time you see the worn threads along their edges? Repair them or find new ones that improve your comfort. If you’re happy in your space, you’ll find that negative energy has a much harder time gaining a foothold.
This doesn’t mean you should remove all items that are in need of repair. Some items develop a charm due to their marks of age and use. Don’t get rid of that old guitar you’ve had for years because it has a few scratches on it. Those scratches are part of its character!
Plants help clear energy. Research the plants you’re interested in. Do you have places that receive a great deal of sunlight, and others that are persistently shaded? There are plants for all these environments. Again, be careful to check that the plants you choose won’t put your pets at risk. You can also choose medicinal plants, such as the aloe which can be used to treat minor wounds. Plants not only draw out negative energy, they also improve the air you breathe.
Rearrange Your Furniture
Changes to your living space can dramatically improve your frame of mind by giving you a new way of seeing your home. Perhaps read up on Feng Shui before you do so, to find out how best to position your furniture and make your home a barrier to negative energy. In general, open space is better than constricted space.
Ring A Bell In Each Corner Of Each Room
This practice has its roots in ancient cultures. As you ring the bell, focus on removing negative energy. But more than this, actively invite abundance and joy into your home. Focus on what makes you happy.
You can even make this a ritual you perform once a month, as a way of keeping negative energy at bay.
Add Flowing Water
Some people, especially those living in dry climates, enjoy adding a small fountain to a corner of their homes. These tabletop fountains can be purchased easily and recirculate a small amount of water over stones or crystals. The sound of the running water is relaxing, and the flowing water also has cleansing properties.
Play Calming Chant Music
Gregorian chants, or music tailored for yoga and meditation. All of this can help bring calm into your world. I recommend the Gayatri Mantra by Deva Premal. It’s actually a prayer.
